DIBRUGARH, Nov 9 - Former national football team captain turned politician Bhaichung Bhutia today said that popularity of football as a sport is growing steadily in the country, particularly among the people of Northeast.
The footballer hailing from the state of Sikkim, who was here in the city for the promo of one of the sports mart � �Sports Station�, said that Northeast dominates the national football scenario. �Majority in the national team are from the Northeast. The highest number of players in the Under-16, Under-19 and in the senior team are from Northeast. We are really growing and doing well in football. Therefore, we must collectively ensure that the passion for the game in the region is sustained and promoted further.�
Bhutia further said that the people are now getting more involved in various sporting activities due to COVID-19. �This pandemic has taught us that you can fight COVID-19 only if you are fit and healthy. Therefore, it has become imperative for the people to engage themselves in sports,� said the former footballer.
