GUWAHATI, Oct 19 - A two-day national symposium on the topic of �Regional Disparity of Development in South Asia with Special Reference to North-East India� was held at the Department of Geography, Gauhati University recently.
It was organised by the North-East India Geographical Society (NEIGS) with the sponsorship of ICSSR (NERC), Shillong and in collaboration with the Institute of Indian Geographers, Pune and the Geographical Society of North-Eastern Hill Region (India), Shillong.
Besides a keynote lecture on the topic delivered by Dr KR Dikshit, retired professor of Geography, Pune University, around ten presentations on different aspects of the theme were made by invited senior geographers from different institutes of the country, including Pune University, the International Institute of Population Sciences, Mumbai, Burdwan University, NEHU, Punjab University, Allahabad University and GU.
The event was inaugurated by Dr Mridul Hazarika, Gauhati University Vice-Chancellor as the chief guest.
In the beginning, professor Bimal K Kar, NEIGS general secretary, welcomed the invited guests, resource persons and other participants. He also spoke about the background of the symposium.
The different sessions of the event were chaired by professor AK Bhagabati, president of NEIGS, professor HN Sharma, former president of NEIGS, professor SR Jog, Pune University and professor HN Misra, Allahabad University.
The symposium was attended by NEIGS members, faculty members of the Department of Geography, GU and other nearby institutes and research scholars from GU and Cotton University.
The event came to an end with a number of important recommendations including the need of formation of an Association of South Asian Geographers for better academic coordination among the South Asian nations for the all-round development of the region and its people.
