Most elected representatives merit callback: Lyngdoh

PANAJI, Oct 8 (IANS): The right to recall option in the country's electioneering process can be a "useful thing", former chief election commissioner J.M. Lyndoh said Saturday.

"The callback option is a useful thing. Most (elected) representatives merit callback. In other words, they are not fit for the job," said Lyngdoh, who is in Goa to deliver a lecture on good governance.

Activist Anna Hazare has advocated people's right to callback an elected representative if they are not satisfied with his or her performance.

Lyngdoh said that it would be a tough task to push for such electoral reforms because the candidates would oppose it tooth and nail.

"They will resist it because once people are given the right to recall, then they will ask for other options like 'none of the above' on the electoral ballot," Lyngdoh said.
