AIZAWL, Jan 25 - Along with the rest of the country, Mizoram today observed the National Voters' Day. The day was observed with a special function in all the district headquarters.
In Aizawl, the main function was held at Synod Conference Centre with state Governor Lt Gen Nirbhay Sharma (retd) gracing the occasion as chief guest. It was also observed in all government offices where government employees made voter pledge.
In his address, the Governor praised the fair and clean elections in Mizoram, which he attributed to the collective efforts of churches and NGOs, and said it set an example to the rest of the country. He said he wanted the rest of the country and the world to learn from how elections are conducted in Mizoram.
The Governor, however, expressed disappointment over the small number of woman candidates in elections even though the women outnumber their male counterparts in the electoral roll. He stressed the need to empower women in legislature and administration to uplift their status in the society.
He also appealed to the people for work for the disabled persons.
Persons with Disabilities Commissioner Dr Lalnunthara, who spoke on the occasion about the this year's National Voters' Day theme 'Accessible Elections', emphasised that participation of disabled persons in the elections without any hindrance are their democratic rights.
Chief Electoral Officer S B Shashank, said Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) would be used in Mizoram state Assembly elections which are due for this year-end.
