GUWAHATI, June 2 � The condition of the famous Manik Chandra (MC) Road in the Uzanbazar Barowari area here has been in a deplorable condition for quite some time now. Named after Manik Chandra Barooah, a leading citizen of the State in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the road is replete with potholes making it unsuitable for vehicular traffic, not to speak of walking safely.
Pradip Kakati, a senior citizen of the greater Uzanbazar area and treasurer of the Barowari Puja Committee, alleged that complaints with the State Public Works Department (PWD) for the past about one year have fallen on deaf ears.
Kakati alleged that leakage in the drinking water supply network of the Railways in the area has turned this portion of the road near the Barowari Puja Mandap into a virtual pool. But none of the high officials of the State government and even the High Court judges, who use to pass through this area, has lodged any complaint with the appropriate authorities, like the PWD and the Railways, on the deplorable state of the road, he regretted.
It may be mentioned that many pedestrians, bicycle and rickshaw riders have sustained injuries after falling in these potholes, said Kakati, urging the authorities to take urgent measures to repair the road.
