GUWAHATI, Aug 14 - Addressing an Independence Day-eve discussion on Indias Independence, organised by the Octogenarians Club of Guwahati today, senior journalist DN Chakravartty said that although the Indian National Congress played the most important and inspiring role for the political emancipation of the country, there were several other organisations making substantial contributions in Indias independence.

He said the first struggle for freedom was launched by Indian princes and zamindars to secure their ancestral rights, which was followed by tribal resurgence, antagonized because of new taxation by the British.

He also mentioned about the contributions made by revolutionaries, including Bhagat Singh and his compatriots, and the INA of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Peasants and students also played a great role in the freedom struggle, he added.
