GUWAHATI, July 23 - The Manipuri National Council (MNC) has expressed concern over the recent statement made by Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma regarding appointment of TET qualified youths of the State.

In a statement, the MNC stated that the entire Manipuri community of Assam are at unease after the minister stated that only if a TET qualified candidate had taken up one of the three MIL subjects Bodo, Bengali and Assamese in HSLC examination, his or her job is guaranteed by the government.

The Manipuri language is a constitutionally recognized one and is a medium of instruction from LP school up to high school level and is a subject taught in the MA course of Assam University. More than 20 per cent of the students of Barak Valley are from Manipuri-medium schools. Over 100 TET-qualified educated Manipuri youths are awaiting appointment, it said.

The MNC has sought a clarification from the Assam Government on the sensitive issue as early as possible so that the prevailing feeling of dishonour to the mother tongue of nearly ten lakh population of Assam does not last long.
