Manipur teachers begin hunger strike

IMPHAL, March 1 - Teachers of government schools in Manipur began a relay hunger strike on Saturday over the demand for rectification of RoP (Revision of Pay) 2019.

The teachers under the aegis of the Council of Teachers� Association (COTA), have been on a cease-work agitation since the first week of February. COTA is the umbrella body of All Manipur Elementary School Teachers� Association, All Manipur Secondary School Teachers� Association and All Manipur Government Higher Secondary Lecturers� Welfare Association.

The teachers have been pressing the State Government to adopt pay structures recommended by the Seventh Pay Commission for teachers serving in government and higher secondary schools. The agitating teachers have already staged sit-in demonstrations at the zonal education offices in various districts.

On the first day of the relay hunger strike, teachers from various schools staged protest inside the premises of the zonal education office, Imphal West Zone 1 at Khoyathong here.
