Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

IMPHAL, Jan 16 - Reacting to alleged maltreatment of United Naga Council (UNC) president Gaidon Kamei and publicity secretary SK Stephen during police custody, Manipur police on Sunday clarified that they are being given proper treatment.

Apropos new item carried by the local dailies on January 13 relating to the alleged maltreatment of UNC leaders during police custody, it is hereby clarified that they are being given proper treatment and basic facilities including regular medical check ups, said a police press release. The two UNC leaders were arrested while they were coming in a Bolero car at Pheidinga on November 25 last year on charges of causing disturbances and damaging public properties during the ongoing blockade.

Appeal: Naga Womens Union (NWU) has appealed to Manipur Government to release the arrested UNC leaders at the earliest.

The existing imbroglio is political and not law and order problem and it can be settled if the Government of Manipur has the political will to do so. Holding them as prisoners will not solve the crisis, said NWU in a press release on Saturday.
