Man held for child abuse

MANGALDAI, July 6 - In quick response to an FIR lodged by the District Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Darrang, Sipajhar police arrested one Sanjoy Nath (35) on charges of abusing a girl child.

Talking to this newspaper, Inspector Pabitra Bhuyan, officer-in-charge of Sipajhar Police Station, said, �The accused, who is a father of a child, has been booked in a case registered under the POCSO Act.�

Sources in the CWC said that the child with her widowed mother belonging to a poor family has been the victim of abuse by the accused for the last several years, without any objection from the victim�s mother for reasons unknown.

The whole episode was kept under cover until the accused started uploading obscene videos on social media.

On receiving public complaints, Childline, Darrang rescued the child and produced her before the CWC to record her statement. On the basis of the statement, the CWC chairman lodged an FIR.

This is the second case registered in the police station under the POCSO Act within a month.

Earlier, a case against Anowar Ali (55) of Choto Athiabari village was registered on charges of abusing a 12-year-old child. However, much to the resentment of the local people of Sipajhar area, police has failed to nab the accused for more than three weeks.

In the meantime, then Sipajhar PS officer-in-charge Chandra Kalita was transferred from Darrang district following a news item published in The Assam Tribune in this regard.
