Man critically injured in elephant attack

TURA, Jan 13 - A 28-year-old man was left critically injured after being trampled by an elephant near Depa Garat village under Dainadubi outpost in North Garo Hills.

The incident � the fourth in one month � has led to panic among the residents.

As per reports, the incident took place around 8.30 pm on Sunday, when the victim and a few others were chased by elephants when they came too close to a jungle near their village. During the chase, the victim � Pangsrang G Momin � came too close to an elephant and was trampled upon.

The victim was rushed to the Wageasi PHC from where he was sent to a hospital in Goalpara before being referred to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. �He is currently recovering from the injury,� said Superintendent of Police Abraham T Sangma.

This was the fourth such man-elephant encounter to take place in the last one month. The encounters have left a resident of Salpara under Mendipathar PS dead.

The first attack took place at Chilpara under Kharkutta PS before the herd moved near Khardang village, close to the Assam border and then to Salpara, where a 57-year-old farmer was killed. Officials said the wildlife department has been informed of the menace and a camp was likely to be set up soon to look into the pachyderm attacks.
