Make Guwahati a well-managed city first: LDP

GUWAHATI, Nov 15 - The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has called upon the State government to make Guwahati a well-managed city first instead of talking of concepts like Smart City.

Before we talk about making a Smart City, we should discuss whether that city has the five most basic services sewage water drainage system, rain water drainage system, solid waste management, public transportation system and street lighting and security. If the city lacks such basic services, then to think of building a Smart City is nothing but wild imagination, LDP national chairman Prodyut Bora said.

LDP was reacting to the recent inauguration of 20 Mercedes Benz buses for Guwahati by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal during which he had said that a Smart City needs a smart transportation system.

The party criticised the Sonowal government and said that introducing some luxury buses will not make Guwahati a Smart City.

It alleged that the State government has not been effective in executing plans and demanded steps for effective delivery of the basic amenities that Guwahati city deserves.

LDP State chairman Holiram Terang pointed out that residents of Guwahati are still looking for a permanent solution to the problem of artificial floods.

There is no solid waste management system in place in the city as on date and the Bharalu is a river only on paper. In such a situation what is the point of talking about Smart City, Terang added.
