GUWAHATI, Aug 27 - The Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha has demanded immediate withdrawal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), 1958, from the State.

In a statement here today, the Mahasangha said the Parliamentary Standing Committee of the Union Home Ministry has already recommended withdrawal of the AFSPA from the State. But, the State government led by Sarbananda Sonowal has not opted for the withdrawal of this draconian law.

This law has been providing the personnel of the armed forces ample scope to unleash a reign of terror on the indigenous peoples of the State, besides amassing wealth. The personnel of the armed forces are earning extra allowances for their services rendered in the State because of this legislation, while the common people of the State are made to live under subjugation, said the Mahasangha.
