JONAI, Dec 14 - The Dhemaji district unit of All Assam Students Union (AASU) met State Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta during his Dhemaji district visit recently and pleaded with him to take prompt remedial measures to check pollution of Brahmaputra water.

While stating that Siang river that flows down from Arunachal Pradesh and merges with the mighty Brahmaputra is the lifeline of people of both the States, the AASU requested him to take up the issue with parties concerned with utmost sincerity and attention.

Mahanta, who was accompanied by Jonai MLA Bhuban Pegu and Water Resources department engineers, visited the Siang river at Komolighat portion near Pasighat of Arunachal Pradesh and collected samples for laboratory test.

Talking to reporters at Pasighat, Mahanta informed that the State government has taken up the issue with the Union External Affairs and Water Resources Ministries.

I have intimated Foreign Affairs and Water Resources Ministers in New Delhi and requested them to deal with the situation. The State government has made communication with Arunachal government in this regard and ordered the Water Resources department officials to keep an update on the situation, the minister said.

Referring to the satellite pictures of remote sensing department, Mahanta said that there was heavy landslides at the confluence of Tsangpo and Siang rivers in Tibet during the third week of November this year. The landslides having rich limestone and other minerals contaminated Siang water and finally polluted the mighty Brahmaputra in its downstream.
