AIZAWL, Dec 25 - Christmas was celebrated in a low-key manner in Mizoram due to the COVID-19 restrictions.
The usual merrymaking was missing this time as most of the people celebrated the festival at their homes because of the global pandemic.
Unlike the previous years, there are no worship services, Christmas carols and community feasts.
Community feasts, usually thrown on December 26, are an integral part of Christmas celebrations in Mizoram.
�During the period of Mizoram insurgency, we could not celebrate Christmas properly on many occasions. But after 1986 when the Mizo Accord was signed, which ushered in permanent peace in the State, this is for the first time we are not being able to celebrate Christmas,� says 60-year-old Vanlalruata, a resident of Aizawl.
On Christmas Eve last night, some church organisations conducted Christmas carol which was aired on local TV channels.
The State government has imposed �COVID-19 No Tolerance Drive� and the restrictions will be in force till January 10. Night curfew has been imposed after 8 pm to 4.30 am. The people have been requested to avoid gathering of friends and relatives.
Unlike the previous years, the streets and churches in Aizawl wore a deserted look as there was no rush of devotees. Church leaders said that prayers and Christmas carols will be conducted among family members.
Chief Minister Zoramthanga took to Twitter to wish the people on Christmas.
�May the Prince of Peace brings Joy, Love, Happiness and Blessings to you and your family,� he tweeted.
