GUWAHATI, Nov 8 - The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has demanded immediate implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the State.
The party criticised the Assam government for allegedly not taking steps to implement the NRC in the State and accused the ruling BJP of �conspiring to restart the whole process once again to accommodate the Hindu Bangladeshis whose names were excluded from the final list�.
Referring to the recent statement by Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in which he had accused former NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela for allegedly preparing a fundamentally flawed NRC, Holiram Terang, State Chairman of LDP, accused the ruling party of trying to discredit the whole exercise of updating the register �so that they (BJP) can create a secure vote bank by granting citizenship to illegal Hindu immigrants, thereby promoting their Hindutva agenda�.
Mentioning a reply from the Home and Political department of the state government to a RTI filed by Netra Ranjan Chaudhury on September 23, 2019, LDP National Chairman Prodyut Bora pointed out that the NRC exercise had cost more than Rs 1,300 crore till then.
�Therefore, if the BJP government again starts this exercise, it will not only cost taxpayers money but also be done at the cost of the aspirations of the Assamese people,� Bora said.
The LDP added that the people of Assam have already gone through a lot of hardship to have their names included in the NRC.
�By restarting the exercise again, the BJP government will not only undermine a constitutionally valid document but also prove that the �Jati, Mati, Bheti� slogan of the last Assembly elections was a campaign gimmick aimed only to garner votes,� Bora said.
The LDP also condemned what it termed as �unnecessary politicization of NRC in the State by the BJP� and demanded immediate implementation of it.
The party also made it clear that it will oppose any move to restart the NRC process in Assam.
