CHABUA, June 15 - A massive congregation of people under the banner of Sanmilito Nagorikotto Sansudhani Birudhi Mancha was held at the Young Blue Club playground here today in protest against the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

Amulya Khatoniar presided over the meeting and Dipenjyoti Phukon explained the subject matter of the meeting.

Senior Journalist Haider Hussain, KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi and Dr Apurbo Baruah spoke as chief guests.

Akhil Gogoi criticised Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for his failure in taking bold steps against the Bill. He also said that it is very clear that Assam can no longer take the burden of foreigners and no power can impose them (read foreigners) on the State.

He further said that the State was compelled to accept the foreigners who came to Assam before March 25, 1971, but cannot take any more burden today. The State and also the Central Government must take steps to withdraw the Bill.

Several thousand people attended the Gana Samabesh.
