Khurshid for consensus on AFSPA

Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

NEW DELHI, Oct 25 (PTI) Against the backdrop of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah pushing for revocation of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, Law Minister Salman Khurshid today said the Home Minister and the Defence Minister should concur on the issue before a final call is taken on the ticklish issue.

The Home Minister and the Defence Minister should first concur on the issue and the Army should be taken on board before a final decision can be taken (on AFSPA withdrawal), he told reporters here.

In reply to a question, he said Abdullah may have compelling reasons to address the aspirations of the people of the state for pushing for the withdrawal of the special law, which has been in force in the state for more than 21 years.

Abdullah had recently said that AFSPA and the Disturbed Areas Act will be revoked from some areas of Jammu and Kashmir within the next few days. PTI
