Karbi body seeks use of English in NRC

DIPHU, Aug 25 - The Karbi Employees Association (KEA), central committee of West Karbi Anglong, Hamren, through a formal request to the District Registrar of Citizen Registration, has requested the use of English language in preparing all voter lists and the National Register of Citizens.

The KEA said the voter list is prepared under the provision of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, and the NRC has been prepared under the provision of the Citizenship Act and Rules. These are recognised as authentic documents for a citizen of India but it (NRC) was published in Assamese with lots of spelling mistakes and errors. In view of the overwhelming educational evolution of the people living in Schedule area, English is a preferable script to write correct spellings instead of Assamese, it said.

KEA general secretary Borsing Teron said the people of Karbi Anglong have been facing a lot of difficulties in finding out their names as the present day youths of the district neither read nor write in Assamese.
