Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

GUWAHATI, Dec 20 - The planets Jupiter and Saturn will seem to merge into one planet on Monday in a celestial phenomenon known as Planetary Conjunction.

It is marked as a great conjunction event as the two biggest planets of the solar system are tending to merge apparently to a single point in the sky within 0.1-degree separation from each other. The last such observable conjunction happened nearly 800 years ago in 1226 AD and the next such conjunction will not occur till March 15, 2080.

The Guwahati Planetarium in association with the Pragjyotish Amateur Astronomers Association, Guwahati has made arrangements to observe the conjunction event on the planetarium premises from December 21 to 27 from 5 pm to 6 pm. This is considered among the rarest of the celestial events that can arouse awareness and create scientific curiosity among the general public.
