Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

DIBRUGARH, Dec 28 - Discredited Assam Medical College teacher Dr Ajanta Hazarika surrendered before the Chief Judicial Magistrate here today, even as the police were trying to arrest her since December 7, after a corruption case was slapped on her. She was sent to judicial custody and her bail petition was rejected. Police sources said they would be seeking her police remand on Tuesday.

Dr (Smt) Ajanta Hazarika is accused of duping several persons of millions of rupees in bribe money after promising them jobs in railways and other places. She was accused of flaunting her political connections in recorded phone conversations while seeking to transact job-for-money from gullible persons. She had been evading arrest and her surrender at the Judicial Courts here today took the police by surprise. The cops had earlier taken into custody her husband too, in connection with the scandal. He is an employee of the LIC here.
