MORIGAON, Jan 11 - The historic Jonbeel Mela along the bank of Jonbeel, a huge natural water body in Morigaon district, will be held with a three-day programme from January 16.

The traditional Jonbeel Mela is being held every year commencing from the first day of Magh Bihu under the auspices of old Gobha king. The fair will be started with the royal feast organised by the Gobha king. This will be followed by exchange of agricultural products between hills and plain tribes on the second day of the fair. The Mela will conclude on the third day where royal court will collect taxes from the people of the old kingdom.

The Mela is still carrying on with the old tradition of barter system among the tribals and non-tribal people of central Assam. The organising committee of Jonbeel Mela has appealed to all organisations not to call any bandh during the the Mela.
