NEW DELHI, Jan 27 - Reiterating their opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, a delegation of NDA ally Janata Dal (United), led by its national secretary general KC Tyagi will reach Guwahati on Monday to take stock of the ramifications of the Bill.

Addressing newsmen at JD(U) Delhi Office, Tyagi said they are planning to meet various groups and organisations in Assam. Tyagi would be accompanied by its national vice president Prasant Kishore, its Northeast in-charge NSN Lotha and its general secretary Afaque Ahmed Khan.

The JD(U) delegation will also meet leadership of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).

A delegation of the AASU had called on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on May 23 last seeking his partys help in Parliament to defeat the Bill.

Tyagi said the JD(U) has demanded that the Government of India must give serious consideration to all the contentious issues regarding the Bill and mitigate the concerns of the people of Assam. Our party has decided to oppose the Bill despite being an NDA ally, he said.

He said the delegation upon their return to Bihar will apprise the party leadership about the situation in Assam.

Meanwhile, ahead of the ensuing Budget Session, all eyes are on the Congress party, which has 50 members and can play a crucial role. But smaller regional parties are sceptical about the role of the Congress and suspect that like in Lok Sabha, it might just abstain from the House during passage of the Bill.

Tyagi on Saturday made it clear that they are not going to abstain from the House but fight it out in the House till the end. But he wondered what would be the Congress strategy in the Upper House.

Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Congress leader Bhubaneswar Kalita had told this newspaper that they will not boycott the House but will be in full attendance opposing the Bill. They also claimed to be in touch with other like-minded parties to defeat the Bill.
