Jawan hurt in Nagaland ambush

DIMAPUR, May 31 � An Assam Rifles jawan was critically injured in yet another ambush on the force at Phesama village near Kohima on Friday.

A four vehicle convoy of Assam Rifles was on its way to Kisama from Kohima when it was fired upon by unknwon miscreants, seriously injuring a havildar. The injured jawan was later airlifted to Kolkata and his condition was stated to be stable, sources said.

Security forces said that the NSCN(K) was involved in the incident that took place between a small stream and the FCI godown after crossing Phesama police check gate towards the Heritage village, Kisama.

Police recovered 12 empty cases of 5.56 calibre and 27 cases of 7.62 calibre from the site. The sources also disclosed that around ten to twelve NSCN(K) cadres were believed to have been involved in the ambush.

The ambush is seen as a retaliation against the arrest of NSCN (K) finance secretary Khekaho Rochill in Dimapur on May 28. Three others were apprehended along Zunheboto-Kohima road on May 26.

The NSCN (K) has been targeting the Assam Rifles since March 26.
