Japanese Encephalitis, dengue claim 6

MORIGAON, June 16 - Japanese Encephalitis has taken a serious turn at Lahorighat and Bhurbandha blocks of Morigaon district, claiming six lives and affecting more than 200 people of several villages so far.

According to Dr Biplab Kumar Gohain, Joint Director of Health, Morigaon, four death cases due to Japanese Encephalitis and dengue were reported in the district during the last 48 hours. He said that at Lahorighat Tengaguri village, one Khalija Begum (65) and a nine-year-old boy, Abu Bakkar Siddique, died of the disease. Their death reports confirmed infection by the Acute Encephalitis virus.

On the other hand, Kamaleswari Devi (55) of Balijan village and Jaya Bordoloi of Solmari village also lost their lives to Encephalitis. Medical teams have confirmed the death of two other women, Rabia Khatoon of Borchapori village and Saruja Begum (65) of Lochanbori village, due to Encephalitis and dengue respectively yesterday.

Meanwhile, the State Health Department has taken measures to control the disease in remote areas of the district. Apart from awareness programmes, the Department has launched vaccination drives in the affected areas, Joint Director of Health Dr Gohain stated.
