TURA, April 19 - An angry mob burnt down a car carrying illegal timber late last night near the Rongjeng Forest Reserve in East Garo Hills district.

According to local residents, a vehicle was noticed moving suspiciously near the Rongjeng Reserve. The car bearing registration number ML 05 B 8983 was caught by the locals near the PWD office under the Rongjeng Police Station.

They were smuggling timber from the Dambo Rongjeng Reserve in a modified Maruti 800 car. On seeing the angry crowd, the driver fled the scene. Unidentified villagers then torched the car with the timber inside, said a local resident on condition of anonymity.

If the villagers can catch these criminals, why cant the authorities whose job is to protect our forests? asked a local.
