Int�l chess meet in city

GUWAHATI, Feb 15 � All Assam Chess Association is going to hold a FIDE rating international chess championship here in the city from April 2 to 6.

Disclosing about the championship in a press conference at Guwahati Press Club here today, publicity secretary of the championship Biswajit Bharadwaj said, the State chess body will organise the meet in collaboration with Cotton College Union Society at Dr T Ao Indoor Stadium in Cotton College premises.

The championship has been recognised by the international chess body (FIDE) and All India Chess Federation.

Bharadwaj said, players who are below 2200 of FIDE rating will be eligible to take part in the meet which will be played in 10-round Swiss League basis where an amount of Rs 2 lakh will be at stake as prize-money.

The organisers are expecting around 300 players from all over the country and few from neighbouring countries like Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangaladesh etc. Dharminder Kumar will be the chief arbiter for the tournament.

Organising president Dr Siben Datta, secretary Nandan Buragohain, vice president Lakhyajyoti Saikia were also present in the press meet.

The organisers revealed that State youngsters like Shahil Dey, Manthan Kashyap will get opportunity to show their skills in the championship.
