TURA, June 8 - The administration has shut down Internet service in the entire Garo Hills region following the renewed agitation over the removal of an office-bearer of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) today.
Services like SMS and Internet will be unavailable in the Garo Hills in a bid to curb spread of rumours.
According to sources, the decision to suspend the Internet services came after a high-level meeting. The service is expected to remain suspended for an initial period of 48 hours.
The order was issued by the Additional Chief Secretary, MS Rao, after a report was submitted by the Meghalaya DGP over the law-and-order situation in the Garo Hills.
The Internet service was suspended at 3 pm today and the suspension will cover all the five districts of the Garo Hills.
