GUWAHATI, Feb 27 A major catastrophe was averted when a liquid petroleum cylinder-based powerful improvised explosive device (IED) was recovered and destroyed on the busy Goalpara-Dudhnoi/Mendipather-Guwahati railway track at Barigaon near Dudhnoi by the Goalpara- based Army troops of Red Horn Division today.

The Army, which acted on intelligence provided by Eastern Command Intelligence, conducted a detailed search together with the Assam Police.

The IED was recovered by the troops with the help of an Army explosive detector dog. The IED was found well camouflaged and entrenched under the railway track, the only railway connectivity to Meghalaya and the alternate rail route connecting Guwahati with the rest of India. The activation of the IED would have disturbed the ethnic-sensitive and fragile peace in Goalpara district and the adjoining hills of Meghalaya, an Army source said.
