GUWAHATI, Dec 15 - As today was the last day of the interim period for holding dharna and protests beside the Dighalipukhuri as per the Gauhati High Court order, the Lawyers� Association Guwahati has said that it would move the court again, if the administration grants any further permission to hold such activities near the tank.
A division bench of the High Court, hearing a PIL moved by the LAG, had directed the administration to find an alternative location for protest activities, as it caused immense hardships to the common people, commuters, school children and patients. The court however, had given three months� time to the authorities to find an alternative location. Till then, limited protest activity was allowed provided the main thoroughfare remained free from any blockade and traffic rules were not violated.
Addressing the media here today, Shailendra Das, president of LAG said that in the last three months they received no communication from any of the four respondents. The respondents included the State government, the Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner, the Guwahati Police Commissioner and the Central Zone DCP.
Meanwhile, demonstrations and protests were on during the interim period with a number of organisations taking to the streets with their various demands. Today also a group of people organised a protest on the bank of the Dighalipukhuri demanding justice for college student Shweta Agarwal, who was found dead at a friend�s house in Shantipur area of the city.
