SHILLONG, Oct 12 - The Meghalaya High Court has directed the State Government to extend pension and other benefits to teachers of Government-aided, ad hoc and deficit schools and colleges of the State.

A single bench of the High Court comprising Justice SR Sen passed the order in this respect and said that the State Government should make appropriate rules to extend the pension benefits. The Government counsel had argued that there was no provision in the present rules to extend such benefits, to which Justice Sen said that the Government has the power to amend Acts and rules for extending pension and other benefits.

The Court passed the order on the basis of a petition filed by the Greater Phulbari Area Deficit School. This judgment shall be applicable throughout the State of Meghalaya, Justice Sen said.

The Government was directed to implement the order within the next three months and ensure that the Fifth Pay Commissions recommendation is followed in letter and spirit.

Justice Sen ruled that teachers deserve to live a decent and comfortable life after retirement.
