TURA, Sept 26 - A daylong Kisan Mela-cum-harvest festival was held on the Matchakolgre LP School playground here today. It was organised by the District Horticulture Office, West Garo Hills, and supported by the District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department, District Agriculture Office and Department of Fisheries.
The event coincided with the Rashtriya Poshan Abhiyan under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture, 2018-19.
Speaking on the occasion, West Garo Hills DC Ram Singh said that most farmers of the region do not possess the mandatory Kisan Credit Cards to avail of benefits under various government schemes.
Since the Aadhaar card is also mandatory for farmers to avail of benefits of government schemes, a special enrolment drive will be conducted next month, he said.
The DC urged bank officials to assist the farmers in opening bank accounts and activating dormant accounts since financial assistance for the beneficiaries is directly deposited in bank accounts.
Singh urged the district officials to guide the people, especially farmers, in completing formalities for availing of schemes so that the target of doubling farmers income could be achieved.
He said that there were reports of a section of beneficiaries selling the agricultural tools and implements provided to them under government schemes. Singh instructed Agriculture officials to look into the matter. The DC, along with other dignitaries, later inaugurated the stalls put up by different departments at the mela for sale of local agricultural produce and other items.
