Handloom expo begins at Namchi

GANGTOK, Dec 8 - The 15-day special handloom expo, organised by Sikkim Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited under the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom, was inaugurated by ASP, South, Jayapandiyan J, at the Central Park in Namchi on Saturday.

The event, sponsored by the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handloom), Union Ministry of Textiles, is being held from December 7 to 21. The inaugural function was attended by the Zilla Adhyaksha (South), Tshering Dem Bhutia, councillors of the Namchi Municipal Council, and other officials and trainees.

The expo seeks to provide a platform to weavers, sellers and buyers and create awareness about the handloom and handicraft sector as an employment and income-generating industry. An array of handloom and handicraft products from different parts of the country are being displayed in the expo.

A total of 30 stalls have been put up by various weavers and self-help groups.
