GUWAHATI, Nov 6 The Assam Government will seek Rs 500 crore from the Centre for taking up different projects to preserve the memory of music maestro Dr Bhupen Hazarika. This was disclosed by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

In a statement, Gogoi said that the project would include a central music, arts, culture and film centre in memory of Dr Hazarika. Similar centres would be set up in district, subdivisional and block headquarters of the State, he added.

Gogoi clarified that the government is not keen on making construction of Dr Hazarikas memorial a government affair, and that is why he is seeking the cooperation of the people of Assam in this regard, as Dr Hazarika was a peoples artiste. He revealed that funds have been allocated in the States Budget for construction of the Dr Hazarika memorial.
