Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

GUWAHATI, June 3 After buses and other forms of motor vehicles, the Government has now decided to tighten the noose on slow moving vehicles operating in Guwahati.

Sources informed that slow moving vehicles, especially rickshaws are plying on the city roads without adhering to the prescribed norms of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC). Be it timely registration or holding proper licences, hundreds of rickshaws and hand carts are flouting the norms, official sources told this reporter.

The administration has also expressed concern on rickshaws operating without installing proper head-lights while operating at nights.

The Corporation is expected to launch a drive against the erring owners of the rickshaws and the rickshaw pullers in a day or two.

It has also been reported that vehicular traffic congestion in the busy city roads have largely been aggravated due to unorganized movement of slow moving vehicles, which has also emerged as a cause of concern for the administration, the sources pointed out adding, moves are likely to be initiated to streamline their movements.
