Govt seeks public view on rhino horn trimming

GUWAHATI, March 20 � The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) & Chief Wildlife Warden, Assam, has constituted a committee to ascertain the feasibility and the necessity for trimming of horns on translocated and stray rhinos in Assam.

The committee has invited the opinions of all citizens of Assam in writing on the pros and cons of trimming of horn as an experimental measure to help safe population growth of translocated rhinos in Assam and for rhinos that often stray out of the rhino-bearing areas (Kaziranga NP, Pobitora WLS, Orang NP, Manas NP, etc.), an official release said.

Individuals or organisations can also inform the committee why trimming of horn must be done or must not be done, giving proper justification. The written opinion along with full identity and contact details of the individual/organisation should reach the address given below on or before March 30, with the subject line �Opinion on proposed trimming of rhino horns.�
