GUWAHATI, June 13 Luck did not smile on Global FC, Gossaigaon as they went down fighting to host Guwahati FC 0-1 in their Assam State Premier League match at the Nehru Stadium here today.
The match-winning goal came in the injury time when Nigerian striker ND Opara converted a spot kick. As per the referees decision, Arjun Mardi handled the ball inside their box and he whistled for a penalty. The decision, however, could not satisfy the Gossaigaon players. Just after the goal the final whistle was blown.
It was an entertaining encounter as despite playing on an unfavourable ground, both the teams adopted attacking tactics from the initial stage. The local team enjoyed marginal territorial supremacy and created some good scoring opportunities. Opara, Lalliansanga, Abhihsek Rai and Sagar Gurung came close of scoring on a few occasions. But due to poor ground conditions, they failed to take shot on the target. Guwahati FC defenders also showed solidity with a disciplined setting at the defensive third.
The Global frontliners Mithinga Rabha, Soloman Oldiade and David K Hmangthanga were able to create panic at the Guwahati FCs striking zone but could not break through the defence line.
With todays win, Guwahati FC leapfroged to the second spot of the Lower Assam Zone points table with eight points from five outings. They won two, drew two and lost one.
On the other hand, the Gossaigaon team is at the fourth position with four points.
At Dibrugarh, host Trinayanjyoti FC of Chabua drubbed Barekuri FC 7-1 in an one-sided affair.
