Gogoi sceptical over highway plans

GUWAHATI, July 3 Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi expressed doubts on whether the recent announcement of the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari that 10,000 km of highway construction involving a whopping Rs 1,00,000 crore for the northeastern region would become a reality.

In a statement here on Thursday, Gogoi said that although Gadkaris big announcement at a recent conference in Guwahati sounded good, it would never actually take off against the gloomy backdrop of existing national highways being in a dilapidated state despite the State Governments repeated pleas that they must be maintained and repaired to keep the surface communication in good condition for smooth movement of goods and passengers.
