GUWAHATI, June 10 - Kamrup (Metro) Deputy Commissioner M Angamuthu administered the oath of office to Mayor and Deputy Mayor of GMC, Mrigen Sarania and Bijuli Kalita Medhi respectively, on Friday at a function held at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra here.
Mayor Mrigen Sarania soon after the ceremony announced that the civic body would give topmost priority to the issue of artificial flooding in the capital city. He said that almost all areas of the city had been bearing the brunt of waterlogging and the need of the hour was adopting a scientific approach integrated with long-term measures to bring respite to the harassed citizens.
�Whatever schemes the GMC has at present to address the issue of artificial flooding will be expedited. But it is also important for the public to cooperate with us. If the public is not aware about their responsibility, it would be impossible to transform Guwahati into a clean and beautiful city,� he said.
Sarania further said that apart from the issue of artificial flooding the city was also plagued with myriad other problems like lack of adequate street lights, clogged drains, dilapidated roads, etc. �We will take up the issues on a priority basis and want to assure the citizens that no stone will be left unturned to make Guwahati beautiful,� promised Sarania.
Deputy Mayor Bijuli Kalita Medhi in her address said that it is the duty of all to make Guwahati green and beautiful and she invited constructive criticism so that the GMC can meet the expectations of the citizens.
The function was attended by MLAs Siddhartha Bhattacharya and Atul Bora and GMC Commissioner N Konwar.
Speaking on the occasion, Siddhartha Bhattacharya said that the civic body has many challenges ahead and assured that all support would be extended to it. He also pointed out that the public is responsible for the present problems, including the problem of artificial flooding.
�It is time people realised their fault. Most of the water bodies have disappeared paving the way to high-rise buildings which has created the problem of artificial flooding. So now the people should show the determination to resolve the self-created problem,� said Bhattacharya.
