Gauripur Sabha remembers Gohain Barua

GAURIPUR, Dec 28 - Synchronising with the 104th foundation day celebration of Asam Sahitya Sabha, the Gauripur branch of the state�s apex literary body remembered Padmanath Gohain Barua, the founder president of the Sabha, by organising a memorial meeting on the branch premises on December 26.

Dr Upendrajit Sharma, Head of the Department of Assamese, BN College, Dhubri, who is also the magazine secretary of the Asam Sahitya Sabha, offered floral tributes at the portrait of the litterateur.

Kshitish Chandra Roy, president of the Sabha branch, presided over the meeting.

Manas Chakraborty, secretary of the branch, explained the purpose of the memorial meeting.

Dr Sharma in his speech spoke about the untiring efforts of Gohain Barua in establishing the Sahitya Sabha in 1917 by overcoming many hurdles. Gohain Barua tried to establish Assamese language and culture thwarting stiff opposition by some so-called intellectuals of Bengal, he said.

The meeting was also addressed by Sohrab Ali, Ashtosh Roy, Gunu Chandra Mali, Panchanan Das and others.
