SHILLONG, Feb 2 (IANS): A Garo militant was on Monday killed in a fierce gunfight with security forces in Meghalaya as security forces busted a militant transit camp, police said.

The gunfight broke out when A'chik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) militants opened fire at a team of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) backed by Combat Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) commandos raiding their transit camp at a hilltop at Boldra Abri area near Soba Jambal village in North Garo Hills district.

"An AMEF militant identified as Sengrak S. Sangma alias Andalao Matgrik was killed on the spot while the others, including its chairman Jack Marak escaped," district police Chief JFK Marak told IANS.

A pistol, PEK explosives, detonators, two high-frequency wireless sets and some documents were recovered from the camp site, police said.

The AMEF is a splinter group of the Garo National Liberation Army, a terrorist organisation fighting for a separate Garoland to be carved out of Meghalaya.
