TURA, July 9 - A film based on the plight of pineapple growers in Garo Hills was released on Thursday. The movie not only sought to provide a glimpse of the lucrative pineapple industry but also a fillip to the sagging morale of Garo film industry.
Aptly titled A�songni Janera (Mirror of the land) and directed by Garo filmmaker Roni Sangma, the film was premiered yesterday in Tikrikkila with Parliamentary Secretary Michael T Sangma attending the show.
�We sought to highlight the plight of the Garo pineapple farmers in the film as they are a deprived lot. Despite pineapples from Garo Hills being a huge money churner, it is the middlemen who pockets most of the profit,� said Roni.
Producer and script writer Fr Benoy Joseph said, �It is a documentary on pineapple farmers. The pineapple farmers gets minimum price for the pineapple but the middle men makes the money. The film exposes what is happening in the society including corruption, militancy, exploitation, injustice, amongst others,� he said.
