SILCHAR, Dec 25 - Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari urged upon the graduating students of Assam University Silchar to hone their skills in research and innovation, entrepreneurship, science and technology and focus on ways to be employers instead of job seekers. In his address at the 18th convocation of the varsity on Friday, Gadkari said, �Conversion of knowledge into wealth is the future of the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given us a"mission of making the Indian economy worth 5 trillion dollar best in the world. Students who are graduating today from this university must focus on becoming able entrepreneurs instead of job seekers.�
He urged the students to contribute to the socio-economic transformation of the state and the country at large with the knowledge they acquired through education at the institute of higher learning. In his words, the country needs reforms in key sectors like education, health sector etc. The Union Minister handed over the D Litt degree to Md Mahmood Alam Ansari on the occasion. A total of 6,609 candidates were given degrees in this year�s convocation. However, considering the COVID-19 situation, the university has arranged for multiple days to give away the degrees to the recipients.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who also present in the convocation as guest of honour greeted the students and said that it is a remarkable day in the lives of the students who have achieved their degrees and it is a special day for the parents and families as well. The university has continued to make us proud with its remarkable achievements over the years. I congratulate the present Vice Chancellor, Prof Dilip Chandra Nath and his predecessors for creating a good reputation of the university to emerge as a dynamic institution and a major educational hub in the entire North-east.
The Chief Minister also reminded the students that the day is also celebrated as Good Governance Day commemorating birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee who always held a special place for Assam in his heart and initiated major projects like the 3,300 kms long Silchar Saurashtra East West corridor.
�I feel proud to address the young graduates and request them about the foreign policy given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to connect North East with South East Asian nations. A market of 800 million population in the ASEAN and BBN countries and in the near future Assam wants to be the most visible state of the country in the whole of south east Asia leading education, agriculture, health, culture and sports and tourism for which the students of the state must develop their personality to take up the challenges lying ahead towards the vision,� Sonowal said.
Union Minister of Food Processing Industries Rameshwar Teli, State Minister for Forest and Environment Parimal Suklabaidya, Silchar MP Dr Rajdeep Roy were among other dignitaries were present in the convocation.
