Foundation stone of sericulture project laid in Mangaldai

MANGALDAI, Jan 1 - Bringing a ray of hope for the weaving artisans of Darrang district and its adjoining areas, the foundation stone of the second largest Multi-end Automatic Reeling and Twisting Plant of the State was laid at the Government Sericulture Farm campus here yesterday.

The foundation stone of the Rs 30-crore project called Intensive Bivoltine Sericulture Development Programme under the Union Ministry of Textile and funded by the North East Regional Textile Promotion Scheme (Assam) was ceremonially laid by Mangaldai legislator Gurujyoti Das.

In this connection a public function was organised, which was attended by several distinguished guests, including Deputy Commissioner of Darrang district Ghanshyam Dass, Chief Executive Officer of Darrang Zila Parishad Tez Prasad Bhushal, Revenue Circle Officer of Mangaldai Dipsikha Saikia, journalist Bhargab Kumar Das and president of Darrang BJP Amarendra Sharma, etc., besides a sizeable section of local sericulture farmers, weavers and common people.

Speaking on the occasion, Gurujyoti Das stressed the need of maintaining necessary quality in the construction work and its early completion. He was hopeful that when the project is completed, a large section of weavers of the area will be economically benefitted as they may produce their twisted mulberry yarn at a very low cost here.

Earlier, Assistant Sericulture Director of Darrang district, Jogesh Chandra Talukdar presented a brief account of the proposed project and also about sericulture activities in the district under SOPD (G) and IBSDP (NERTPS), among others.
