Former State footballer dead

GUWAHATI, June 11 � Former State footballer and a leading striker of Oil India Limited (OIL) team Phanidhar Sonowal died at his Duliajan residence today after a brief illness. He was 53. Hails from Naharkatia, Phanidhar was familiar for his speed and striking ability. He represented the State junior and senior teams in late seventies and early eighties. He was a recipient of State award in 80s for his proficiency in the game of football and athletics. An employee of OIL Phanidhar is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. His untimely demise cast a pall of gloom among the sporting fraternity in the State.
