Flood scene worsens in south Kamrup

MIRZA, Aug 26 � The flood situation in south Kamrup has worsened with the water level of the Brahmaputra rising alarmingly, creating panic among the residents of over 20 villages in Palasbari, Hajo and Chhaygaon LACs of the district.

Sources said that over 10,000 families of Futuri, Bartari, Kondolpara, Biturtari, Baniapara, Bardiagaon, Bardia NC, Bhatkhowadia, Kalapani, Pagladia etc ., under Palasbari Revenue Circle and Asalpara, Jahirpur, Balagaon, Choraimari, Nayapara, Batahidia, Maghuwa etc., under Chhaygaon Revenue Circle have been reeling under floods. Hundreds of families of several helmets of riverine areas of Palasbari LAC have been marooned.

Sources said that the flood-affected populace , who have already lost their crops in the floods, have been facing acute shortage of foodgrains and they have demanded immediate supply of relief materials for their survival. Over a hundred families have shifted their home to the highlands at Bardia and Bhatkhowadia villages under Palasbari LAC and over 60 families have also been taking shelter at the embankment at Kuriahamari village located in the periphery of Palasbari LAC.

The flood-hit people of Palasbari LAC alleged that they have been facing serious shortage of boats for transportation of goods, collection of fodder, rescue of the livestock and marooned people as the administration has reportedly provided only four boats for 10 villages of the area.

Meanwhile, fresh erosion has also been reported at Makadhuj village under Palasbari-Gumi Project (Water Resources) Division and over 200 meter segment of the Palasbari-Gumi embankment at Makadhuj village, which is situated just 70 meters away from the erosion site, could be breached at any time. Formidable erosion has also been reported at Simina-Kendurtol area of Palabari-Gumi Project (Water Resources) Division but till date no anti-erosion work has been launched at the area.

Sources said that the Land Spur No 1 at Futuri village in Kamrup district is also under constant threat of being washed away by the flood water of the Brahmaputra.
