JORHAT, Feb 5 - The Institution for Culture And rural Development (I-CARD), based at Baghchung here organized a three-day exposure trip for 24 women belonging to Mising community to Kokrajhar recently.
An I-CARD press note stated that the women group, accompanied by five staff members of I-CARD and its Director Father KA Thomas, visited important institutions in Kokrajhar district, which included Bineswar Brahma Engineering College, the cultural complex, Reality Public School, Bodoland Secretariat, Bodoland University, Central Library and National Institute of Technology.
The group also undertook a guided tour of Kokrajhar town, the note mentioned. The guides arranged by NERSWN (North East Research and Social Work Networking), an NGO working for the development of Bodo and other tribes, took the women group to meet Bidangsi Self Help Group members in Doimuguri Bodo village and to Jordan Self Help Group members in Borson Gaon, a Santhali village.
The group learnt about cleanliness of the villages, and activities of the Bodos and Santhalis. The group also visited the all-women Gangjema Market. The group saw Bodo women cutting and vending fish and meat in the market, the note stated.
It may be mentioned here that the visit was organized by I-CARD with an aim
to educate Mising women by showing them progress and empowerment achieved by Bodo women by coming forward to uplift the economic and social condition of womenfolk that contributed to the well-being of the society.
Earlier I-CARD carried out a year-long women literacy programme for Mising community in 29 villages of five districts of the state � Golaghat, Majuli, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar and Dhemaji � and at the end of the programme, the institute promised to take women to the Bodo people-inhabited areas to interact with Bodo women to know about empowerment of Bodo womenfolk.
