Eviction drive under way in North Lakhimpur

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, March 21 - A massive eviction drive is being undertaken in the heart of the town here since Friday last to clear a river bank of illegal encroachers.

The eviction drive was carried out on either side of Gariyajaan river under North Lakhimpur Revenue Circle from Friday and conducted by the Land Revenue Department in the presence of police personnel. The river bank was cleared of illegal constructions and blockades erected over the years by the encroachers. Houses, boundary walls, business establishments and other installations were demolished with the help of excavators and earth movers.

A total of 129 families, who were notified earlier, were evicted in the operation in which 24 houses were completely demolished and 83 others partially destroyed. The eviction drive was conducted in a stretch of 6.5 km in which 34 bighas, 4 kathas and 15 lechas of land were recovered.

The eviction drive was conducted by Manjeet Borkakoty, Circle Officer of North Lakhimpur Revenue Circle and Patrick Ronghang, Additional Superintendent of Police, North Lakhimpur.
