Elephant census in Kaziranga from today

KAZIRANGA, March 24 - The elephant population estimation programme in the Kaziranga National Park will begin tomorrow.

The programme will start at 7 am.

Altogether 71 teams, each consisting of an enumerator, a forest guard, a mahout and a trained domestic elephant will enumerate the elephant population. Moreover, around 20 volunteers from institutions, like the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Gauhati University, JB College of Jorhat and JDSG College of Bokakhat will also participate in the programme, said Chief Conservator of Forest cum Director of Kaziranga National Park cum Tiger Reserve Satyendra Singh, adding that the forest headquarters has also nominated three observers for this purpose.

Singh also informed that all ranges would be covered tomorrow, except Eastern and Northern range.

Some of the enumerators, who are required to stay in the Kaziranga forest camps for three nights, have already moved into the camps.
