GUWAHATI, Jan 21 � Seven lakh citizens of Guwahati would be assured of 24-hour water supply from April onwards if the earnest endeavour of the officers, engineers and workers under the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) achieves fruition without any unforeseen or natural calamity.
This observation was made by Dhiren Baruah, newly-appointed GMDA Chairman, while replying to the felicitation offered to him by the members of the Guwahati Senior Citizens' Association (GSCA) today.
President of the GSCA, DN Chakravartty who presided over the function, while congratulating Baruah, expressed the hope that under his dynamic leadership, the GMDA would be able to remove the long-felt genuine grievances of the city dwellers.
Baruah, in the course of his speech, mentioned the progress of different projects under the GMDA and said that while an amount of Rs 370 crore would be involved for completion of the water supply scheme to cover the western part of the city, the Brahmaputra riverside project covering a distance of seven km from the Kamakhya (Nilachal) foothills to the main gate of the Raj Bhawan would benefit the entire population in general and senior citizens, women and children in particular.
Baruah said that he was insisting on the engineers and officers of the GMDA to execute the project on a war footing in order to make available the portion at old DC Bungalow area covering about two hectares for the benefit of particularly the senior citizens.
The riverside improvement project envisages dismantling of the structures occupied earlier by high police officers and also bringing about improvements facilitating construction of long parks.
Tabiul Hussain, member in charge of administration and coordination, explained the purpose of the meeting and read out the general report. Several members including Jagat Chandra Bora, Baneswar Khound, Madhabananda Dutta Bardoloi, Dr Devdas Bharali, Hemchandra Sarma, Raseswari Hazarika and Mridula Hazarika, while participating in the deliberations, discussed the distortions introduced in the festivals like Bohag Bihu and Magh Bihu by the electronic media, lengthening their duration from their original schedule.
The meeting, by a resolution, appealed to the people to incorporate one item in the agenda of all their meetings for clearing the halls of garbage in the form of cups, plates, and food leftovers following any meeting.
Earlier, Baruah also released the association's journal Prasanti.
